Vancouver area & the Salish Sea
Vancouver and the surrounding waters of the Salish Sea offer some of the most well-regulated whale-watching experiences in the world. Wisewhale had the opportunity to join a tour and also explore the region by private boat—without approaching the animals, of course. Additionally, Wisewhale has connections with some whale-watching captains that have been working there for years. Based on both personal experience and professional insight, we can say that Vancouver stands out as a model for responsible whale watching.
The regulations in place are among the strictest globally, particularly concerning the critically endangered Southern Resident killer whales. Approaching them closer than 300 meters is strictly prohibited, and unlike in many other regions, companies in Vancouver actually respect and enforce these regulations. This level of protection is essential for a species struggling to survive in the face of habitat degradation, declining prey availability, and noise pollution.
Beyond orcas, the waters around Vancouver are home to a remarkable variety of marine life, including Dall’s porpoises, humpback whales, harbor porpoises, minke whales, sea lions, and a lot more. The abundance of wildlife combined with strong regulatory oversight makes Vancouver one of the best places for ethical and sustainable whale watching. While there are always concerns about human impact on marine ecosystems, this region demonstrates how responsible practices can allow for unforgettable wildlife encounters while prioritising the well-being of the animals.
